COLUMBIA - University of ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥ System President Tim Wolfe today announced the appointment of Brian Burnett as chief financial officer for the UM System.  Burnett currently serves as senior executive vice chancellor for administration and finance at University of Colorado-Colorado Springs (UCCS).  UCCS is a master’s large, comprehensive regional research campus of the University of Colorado System (CU).

Dr. Burnett comes to the UM System with an extensive background in public higher education administration,” Wolfe said.  “We are excited to have him broaden the scope and lead our strong finance team. His comprehensive knowledge will help direct the long-term planning efforts and strategy of the business and financial functions surrounding our university system structure, all four campuses and the university health care enterprise.”

At the system level, Burnett will provide management and leadership over departments including treasury, controller, procurement, management services, budget planning and development, and internal audit functions. He will also serve as a general officer to the university. The appointment is effective August 1 and has a starting salary of $300,000.

In his tenure at UCCS, Burnett has served in concurrent roles, such as UCCS vice chancellor for administration and finance, and as CU associate vice president for administration and foundation relations. In that role, he managed the Development Services Agreement between the university and the CU Foundation that supports fundraising activities at all CU campuses.  As an associate member of the graduate faculty, Burnett has published several works and articles, as well as guest lectured and presented on the economic future and fiscal health of public higher education, specifically in Colorado.

A native of Colorado Springs, Dr. Burnett earned a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Colorado Boulder, a master’s degree in finance from the University of Colorado Denver and a doctor of philosophy in educational leadership, research and policy from UCCS.  Previous to his roles at UCCS, Burnett served as the chief financial officer for the Colorado Commission on Higher Education.

After serving as both Interim Vice President for Finance and Treasurer/Chief Investment Officer for the past 12 months, Tom Richards will return to his previous position as Treasurer/Chief Investment Officer.
