MEDIA ADVISORY: University of ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥ System to hold Annual Legislative Day at State Capitol

WHAT: The University of ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥ System will hold its annual Legislative Day at the ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥ State Capitol on Feb. 21. The event is an opportunity for faculty, staff and students to demonstrate the value of the university to ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥ and the university’s commitment in seeking solutions to some of the most difficult challenges facing the state through advanced research, quality education and engagement. 
 
At the Legislative Showcase, faculty and staff from all four UM universities will demonstrate specific projects that are tackling state problems. Exhibits include:
  • Investing in Future Health – how precision medicine initiatives will improve health and the economy.
  • Continuing Education – how the university assists communities retain their work force while helping health employees learn new skills.
  • Opioid Crisis – researchers at UM universities are leading coordinated efforts to curb the opioid overdose crisis in ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥.
  • Helping Small Businesses – All four UM universities have programs that encourage the development and growth of small businesses in ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥, giving rise to new companies and more jobs for the state.
  • STEM education – the future depends on STEM, and UM universities are working to educate the state’s citizens in these fields that have two major benefits: better living quality for ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥ans and better paying jobs for graduates.
  • Teaching students to tackle challenges – practical, hands-on education through student design teams at ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥ S&T provide experiences to students to prepare them for challenges after they graduate.

  • Sen. Caleb Rowden, majority floor leader
  • Sen. Gary Romine, chair of education committee
  • Rep. Dean Dohrman, chair of higher education committee
  • Rep. Greg Razer, member of budget committee
